At the end of 2017 I decided to start a self-esteem journal. Even though I was perfectly happy in my life I wanted to try it out. I learned so much about myself I can’t even begin to tell you. Now, every morning I start my day with my self esteem journal and writing prints from The Writing Shed. I enjoyed this exercise of self reflection so much that I decided that in 2018 I was going to start a joy journal.
What is a joy journal?
Every day I write down the things that bring me joy. In my personal life joy is the theme of my year for 2017. I want to find the joy in each and every day. One thing i have found is it’s not just about the things that bring me joy, but also what doesn’t bring me joy.
How it works
For example: our friends calling my husband to tow their boat to the marina the day before Christmas does not bring me joy. It makes me late for baking cookies and makes me miss some of my last minute Christmas shopping. No joy. But my puppy went into heat for the first time in almost a year which means she’s not sick and doesn’t need any kind of surgery. That brings me so much super joy I can’t even tell you. Everyday we face situations that bring us joy and we find things that don’t bring us joy.
At the end of the day, I look at the things that brought me joy and remind myself how lucky I am that I’ve had those moments. Then I look at the things that didn’t bring me joy. First of all, I’m lucky for them too. Looking back at last Christmas, for example, my shopping being delayed is nothing compared to what others go through fighting cancer or having to deal with major life changes they maybe weren’t prepared for. In that respect, I’m happy my unjoyful moment was my husband being too busy with work for a couple hours.
I also look at my not joy and see what could i have done about it. Can I stop Diego from forgetting to call a few days earlier to have his boat brought to the marina? Maybe next year I’ll call him a week before Christmas. Kidding! Can I stop my husband’s boss from getting a fever the day before Christmas and making my husband do everything? Maybe next year I’ll send him some vitamins and oranges a week before Christmas. Again kidding.
How it has helped me
Each morning i begin the day with my self-esteem journal. At the end of the day I reflect with my joy journal. Not only do I get to analyze myself and see where I’m at, where I was, and where I’m going, but I also get to take a moment and be grateful for everything I have in life. The good and the bad. If you’re interested in doing something like this I, recommend you start with creating a self-esteem journal and take part in the #365shadesofgrateful
